Listening to the first lines of Jason Nelson’s song dominion and he goes like “depression, you have to flee, you no longer have dominion over me” and I couldn’t help but think of a lot of people that have had to battle with depression. You probably have gone through the feeling before without even knowing that it’s called “Depression”.

I can’t just help but think that depression has to do with “Deep-pressing-on a person”.  It’s good that English language gave it a name and that it exists in the dictionary, but in my own dictionary of words, I’d like to kick out depression. It doesn’t even exist! I can’t help but think that I have something personal against depression.

I really do have something against depression. Truly first impression matters and depression has never left even a good second impression on me. Depression is a thief of hope and joy and it knows that am not accusing it wrongly. Ask anyone that has ever being depressed and they would tell you. Depression robs you of God’s blessing, because it knows that Joy is the access to God’s blessings.

Isa 12:3 Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation

Fact about depression is that it is a thing of the mind and it doesn’t rob you without your permission. Asides the fact that depression robs you of your blessings; it also has its effect on your health. Depression has an ageing effect and hinders your spiritual growth.

Pro 17:22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

depressedTwo simple ways in which you can fight depression from the word of God;

Rule your spirit! As simple as this may sound if you don’t have a rule over your own spirit, then you can be easily tossed about by circumstances or situations.

Pro 25:28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

Encourage yourself! Depression would always give you reasons to be downcast, but the only way to fight back is to also give it reasons why you shouldn’t be.

1Sa 30:6 And David was greatly distressed for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people were grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encourage himself in the LORD his God.

If you would just take your eyes off the things that seem to weigh you down and fix your eyes on Jesus, then you would realize that it wasn’t so big after all, just like David and Goliath. Even if you are not capable you serve a capable God.

This darkness couldn’t get darker than this. The weird creature stretched its thin long hand towards his forehead. Sweat had already drenched his bed, and by now he was breathing heavily. He couldn’t believe that he would ever get this scared, and then the creature spoke with a loud voice, “you are mine, mine, mine”. Suddenly there was utter darkness, the music of sorrow was endless, somewhere crying for water, others were beaten to a point of death but of course there was no death here.

In a minute his whole life flashed before his eye, He always thought that everything would be alright if he kept on going to church, but the preacher in his church kept telling them that without Jesus Christ they won’t be able to make it to heaven. Tunji thought to himself well if Jesus Christ is my only passport let me cling to him, so I can enjoy the luxury of Heaven when I die. Little did he know that you can’t deceive God. Anytime the Holy Spirit tried to convict he hardened his heart.

Little did he know that death would come knocking and he would find himself in the lake of fire. He felt something very cold on his face, in fear he opened his eye and of course it was his troublesome elder sister again (what a relieve it was a dream), but he didn’t mind this time around. He gave her a big hug and breezed out of the room, leaving her with a puzzled look on her face. That day Tunji had a long day talking with the Holy Spirit. With the Holy Spirit pointing out this hidden secrets and flaws, the Holy Spirit reminded him that the word of God was his guide in this dark word.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my part (Psalms 119:105)

This might be vague to you, but I love this school of thought from great ministers of God. This is their thought ‘”if am right that there is heaven and hell, then I have nothing to lose. If am not then I still have nothing to lose.”  After letting Christ in, turn on the light

The entrance of thy word giveth light… (Psalms 119: 130)

For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people:

but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee (Isaiah 60:10).

To Tunji it was a dream, but to others this was real and they never had the time to return and turn on the light by accepting Christ as their personal Lord and savior and getting to know is word. Christ is coming soon TURN ON THE LIGHT!

I got thinking today it’s not every time I have felt like giving thanks (Thank God it’s just a feeling).  Have you ever felt like giving thanks but the words won’t come out of your mouth? You may not always feel like it, but thank God we don’t work by our feelings! Start by thanking God for all the things he has done for you, and then it flows from within. Here is a story that illustrates the POWER of thanksgiving.

For three days multitude of men were gathered, along with them were women and children (but of course women and children were not counted as was their tradition then). Now the three days program had come to an end, they were famished. They didn’t notice that they had stayed that long without eating, because they were hanging on to every word He was saying. He was a very caring man He could tell that they were very hungry and so He called his disciples and after much running around they got seven loaves of bread and few  fishes (Mark  8: 1-7). Finally the amazing part

…and he took the seven loaves and gave thanks…So they did eat

and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets.

And they that had eaten were about four thousand… (Mark 8: 6,8,9)

This was the lifestyle of our Lord Jesus Christ, a life of thanksgiving, not minding what the situation around him was. After he gave thanks there was enough food to go around, not just that there was an overflow (Remember women and children were not counted). More people than we actually know were fed by the act of Thanksgiving.

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in

Christ Jesus concerning you (1 Thess 5:18).

Do you want to do the will of God? Know that thanksgiving is the will of God and it is God that worketh in us to will and to do of his good pleasure (Philippians 2: 13). It is the Holy Spirit that helps you to give thanks in Spirit and in truth, not just lip service, but thanksgiving from the depth of your heart. Whenever you don’t feel like giving thanks ask the HolySpirit to help you. I see God bringing you out of that situation as you thank him today.

As a Christian do you know that you can determine how you want your beginning to be like?  Little beginnings are not about starting small!!! What seems small to you might be big to the next person. It is about getting the starting point right, years from now you would want to look back at where you started from as being little, it shows that you have actually progressed. It is about starting right. This is what I could say I was able to learn from the beginning of all the beginnings;

Long ago in faraway Genesis 1: 1-3NLT there was a beginning;

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was

formless and empty and darkness covered the deep waters. And the

Spirit of the God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

Then God said, “let there be light”, and there was light.

ENGAGE THE HOLYSPIRIT; in the beginning God engaged the Holy Spirit in creation (Gen 1: 2). The Holy Spirit loves beginnings, bearing in mind that God is the Alpha and the  Omega (the beginning and the end ), the Author and finisher of our faith. Don’t forget that the Holy Spirit is our HELPER (John 14:16 KJV), the Greek word for comforter is Paraclete meaning one called alongside to help.

SEEK LIGHT; light signifies KNOWLEDGE. God said in (Hosea 4: 6) that His people perish for lack of knowledge. Seek God’s word and build capacity by seeking knowledge in what God has called you to do. That’s the part of CAPACITY BUILDING that was talked about in part 1.

SPEAK; man is a speaking spirit because he was made in the image and likeness of God, start speaking what God has spoken to you into reality, even when it doesn’t seem like it.

WRITE THE VISION; one quality that I appreciate in the life of Bishop David Oyedepo is ability to keep good record of what God has told him along with the date. Whatever God has told you write it down, for a time will come when you would have to refer to it and hang on to it in Faith. (Habakkuk 2: 2).

Easy said, than done …. Learn to lean on the one whose strength is made perfect in your weakness, knowing that it is not by your might, nor by power, but by the Spirit of the Lord (Zechariah 4: 6), it is also not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth but of God that shows Mercy (Romans 9: 16). King James English, May God help Us All!

Thanks for reading through, I appreciate your comments and suggestions, and I look forward to them. God Bless you.
